Children of Am-Nova by Malhyantha

Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Malhy, also known as Emz, or Bunny! I’m a third-year Psychology student, and an avid creative writer, usually through the medium of text-based role-play. I came to Unknown Tales through being nosy and listening in on a conversation about it whilst at work!

What do you enjoy about writing fiction?

I don’t know… I guess it is the creativity. I love to express my thoughts and inner worlds through writing, and share them with the rest of the world. There is something truly stress relieving about writing, and from an artist’s point of view as well, extremely rewarding in regard to creating intricate characters and taking them into a more visual field.

What was the inspiration for the story?

Many would find it crazy, by ‘Children of Am-Nova’ was a dream I once had. It was truly fantastic, and I knew, when I awoke just after the Children escaped that it just had to become a story. I wanted to know where they went from there, what 013 did to be freed, what the extent of his excessive power really was.

How would you like to see the story progress?

I don’t know. ‘Am-Nova’ is my creation, yes, but I want to open it up to others to continue. What happens to 008 and 013? Do they escape with some of the others, or are they recaptured and subjected to debilitating experimentation for the rest of their lives? What was the purpose of their being? Are they a weapon, a tool, or were they just the fancy of some scientific maniac? I’ve no idea. All I know is the beginning, and the rest, the rest is up to those that wish to participate in their journey!

What book are you currently reading?

I am reading Richard Adams ‘Shardik’. It is about a lost civilisation that come to fear a mighty great bear who they believe to be the Power of God. Its extremely descriptive and I love the intricacies weaved into every section of description. Richard Adams is definitely a man to admire in his power to create his worlds around you. Watership Down and Plague Dogs do the same, and I admire him greatly.

The Improbable Crime by Cos Ryan

Tell us a little about yourself

I am a human male, approximately 24 years old, who works for a coffee shop and enjoys delusions of talent in certain circumstances.

What do you enjoy about writing fiction?

I enjoy the creation of characters and worlds, and the power associated with it; I like to put characters in impossible situations and seeing if I’ve created a character realistic enough to make something out of it.

What was the inspiration for the story?

I’d been reading way too much crime fiction, and I like the idea of starting off with a character who knows absolutely nothing about the terrible situation in which he or she is in. It’s a nightmare situation – to wake up with no knowledge of how you got into this situation, with no help or any indication that you can even trust yourself… and then to give the story away for others to progress; just seemed like a nice notion. See if anyone else is as messed up as I am.

How would you like to see the story progress?

I couldn’t possibly comment; part of the joy of this is seeing all the possibilities in which this could progress – I may even write some more if I like the following chapters.

What book are you currently reading?

I’m reading two; A Scanner Darkly, my first Philip K. Dick read, which is very entertaining – funny, disturbing, scary, very very good. The other’s The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, recommended to me by a friend. Not my usual read, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. On my to-do list includes The Final Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko and the Millennium Trilogy by Steig Larsson.

I wanted to make a quick post thanking some of the people and web sites that have helped promote Unknown Tales.

First of all, thank you to Emily Short. Back in April I approached her asking if she would be able to do a review of the site. At the time she declined, stating that she usually covers finished works or games, not communal projects that are still in progress (which is fair enough), but that didn’t stop her from mentioning the site in an article about the second person perspective.

Fast forward to three days ago, and we got a twitter mention by Lulu. This proved to be very popular, being re-tweeted by two other people, and sending a flurry of new members to the site.

And I thought that was it – but I was checking my web-stats today and noticed three sites that I didn’t recognise sending us traffic. The first of these was the eBookNewser, who had given us a mention on their blog, which in turn was picked up by two other blogs: Publishing Perspectives and The Vook Blog.

I could be wrong, but I think that eBookNewser found the site themselves as a result of the Lulu tweet – which I would have never gotten if it wasn’t for @CosRyan pointing me in their direction, so of course, a huge thank you to him as well.

So, in closing, thank you to everyone that has linked to us – if I’ve missed anyone, please let me know so that I can credit you as well

Uncle Ben’s Box by Daniel

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m a 30 year old web developer. I’ve just finished university and am currently working for a local college rebuilding their old site.

What do you enjoy about writing fiction?

The truth is, there is very little that I do enjoy about writing fiction. I like having ideas for stories, and thinking to myself about what the overall plot or idea for them would be, but I never put pen to paper. This in itself is probably a bad thing, as these ideas, all of which are now long gone and forgotten, will never see the light of day. At least starting a story on a site like Unknown Tales allows me to see how the idea develops.

What was the inspiration for the story?

I honestly don’t really know. The first thing I had, before I even realised that I was going to use it to write a story, was the notion of a box staring at someone. I’m sure that sounds weird, but from the point of view of the person being started at, it would be as if the box was somehow alive, and watching them

I then started thinking about the idea of how innocent things can often have hidden dangers, like the coffee table in the living room: a pain in the shin if you kick it, but an altogether more serious danger for a toddler if it were to fall and hit their head on the corner.

I’m not sure where the rest of it came from, I’m not a very strong writer (as might be evident from the first chapter), so I was mostly just looking for a quick and easy way to get to the good stuff – the mysterious box.

How would you like to see the story progress?

Although I did include the bit about Uncle Ben’s story of the tribe in Papua New Guinea worshipping him as a god, this was meant to be nothing more than a throwaway line designed to make the character remember about the box. It’s possible that someone could interpret this as being specifically related to the box in some way, and sending the character off to Papua New Guinea to investigate.

I would also like to see what connection, if any, there is between the box and Biggles, the cat.
